How to Remove Duplicate Values in Excel ?

Table of Contents

Example

From the given dataset, we want to remove transactions containing duplicate invoice numbers.

Steps

  1. Select the complete data set from which you want to remove duplicates
  2. Go to Data tab –> Remove Duplicates
  3. Select the column containing duplicate values and Click ok
  4. A dialogue box showing Number of Duplicate Values found and removed alongwith the Unique Values retained will appear. Click Ok

Note

In case you have selected only the column containing duplicate values in Step 1, then the below dialogue box will appear asking to continue with the Current Selection or Expand the Current Selection.

  • Expand the Selection : When we select this option, it will select the complete data set as shown in Step 1 followed by Step 3 and 4.
  • Continue with the Current Selection : When we select this option, it will remove the data only from the column selected and not from the adjacent cells.
This option works in the same way when we select “Shift Cells Up”  while deleting data from excel.
